This still stands out as the most annoying feedback from an interview…
I was once told that the hiring team didn’t think I showed collaborative skills because I started sentences with “I” instead of “we”. This was weird because I always began my case studies describing the team, my role and how I worked with them. The feedback also ignored that I said “I worked with…” or “I collaborated with…” as they were presented artifacts of the collab. Even my speaker notes (which I tend to follow verbatim) were a mix of both “we” and “I” statements.
So were they not paying attention? 🤷🏽♀️ Still, the next time I had an interview I switched it up. This left the interviewer to question what my role even was in the work presented! 🤦🏽♀️
The lesson… take feedback with a grain of salt.
🧂Feedback can be subjective.
🧂Not everyone is a great listener or good at giving feedback.
🧂Interviewers can have petty biases and judge candidates based on it.
Be willing to try a different approach BUT filter through feedback and only apply what makes sense.
